Program Identity & Fit

This is an academic, five-year combined Internal Medicine/Psychiatry residency at a tertiary/quaternary academic medical center that explicitly organizes its identity around health equity and integrated whole-person care for underserved populations. Residents rotate across a distinctive constellation of sites - the Level 1 trauma center at UC Davis Medical Center, a federally qualified health center serving urban underserved and undocumented patients, the Sacramento County Main Jail forensic psychiatric unit, the VA, and a dedicated Med-Psych integrated clinic - giving substantial exposure to safety-net, correctional, and public mental health systems alongside academic subspecialty medicine. The curriculum builds toward genuine integration (a longitudinal Med/Psych elective, joint didactics with Family Medicine/Psychiatry, an IMPACCT behavioral-health-in-primary-care initiative) rather than simply sequencing two specialties, and residents are expected to produce scholarly work at the medicine-psychiatry interface. The program's stated values center on leadership development, education of others, and dedication to underserved and marginalized communities rather than pure subspecialty fellowship pipelines.
