Emory's Combined Internal Medicine/Psychiatry Program is a five-year, academic university-based residency that integrates the categorical Internal Medicine and General Psychiatry programs, producing graduates eligible for both ABIM and ABPN certification. Training splits evenly between medicine and psychiatry rotations, embedded within a large, research-intensive academic medical center with substantial NIH funding, active clinical trials infrastructure, and formal research training pathways (MSCR, T32, KL2) available to trainees who pursue them. Graduates pursue a broad spectrum of dual-specialty careers - primary care, hospital medicine, medicine-psychiatry consult-liaison, integrated med-psych clinics, emergency and inpatient/outpatient psychiatry, and academic medicine - with fellowship eligibility in either field after completion. The program is small (two PGY1 positions per year), reflecting a boutique, identity-defined training track rather than a high-volume categorical program.
