Program Identity & Fit

This is a university-based four-year Med-Peds program combining tertiary/quaternary training at University Hospital, Primary Children's Hospital, and the VA Medical Center with a distinctive Rural Pathway that places residents in Indian Health Service facilities, rural Montana/Utah/Arizona sites, and urban underserved clinics serving refugee populations. The program's structural hallmark is its integrated "Med-Peds Months," alternating IM and pediatric subspecialty experiences within the same discipline, alongside continuity clinics (Redwood and Westridge) explicitly serving refugee populations across the full age spectrum. Graduates are prepared for both primary care/hospitalist careers and dual or single-specialty fellowships, with the Rural Pathway requiring a dedicated QI/research project in rural or under-resourced health and six months of rural/urban under-resourced rotations. The program values residents drawn to bridging adult and pediatric care in complex referral and underserved settings rather than a narrow subspecialty focus alone.
