Program Identity & Fit

This is a small, community-based Med-Peds program in Wichita, the referral hub for south-central Kansas, northern Oklahoma, and western Kansas, with training split across three high-volume hospitals (Ascension Via Christi St. Francis, Wesley Medical Center, and the Robert J. Dole VA) totaling roughly 1,200 staffed beds. The absence of fellows means residents directly assume fellow-level responsibilities in the ICU, PICU, and NICU, working under close attending supervision rather than layered fellow oversight, and the program emphasizes heavier ambulatory training than typical Med-Peds programs given how much of primary care is practiced outpatient. Research is respected and supported but explicitly secondary to clinical teaching - faculty are described as practicing clinicians who teach because they choose to, not researchers who train residents as a side interest. Graduate outcomes skew toward primary care and generalist practice (about half enter primary care, 15% hospitalist, 25% fellowship), reflecting an identity built around producing broadly capable, autonomous general Med-Peds physicians for real-world community practice rather than subspecialist academicians.
