This is one of the largest Med-Peds programs in the country and the largest in Illinois, built on a 40-plus-year partnership between the University of Illinois College of Medicine and OSF St. Francis Medical Center/Children's Hospital of Illinois, a major downstate referral center. The program's defining feature is its GRowLocal (Global, Rural, Local) Health Equity Track, offering structured longitudinal exposure to underserved care through OSF Care-A-Van, street medicine, shelter medicine, school-based and rural continuity clinics, plus optional international rotations in sites like Haiti, Kenya, and Ghana. Research is present through institutional infrastructure (Research Day, Center 4 Health Research, IRB) but is not positioned as a residency requirement or fellowship pipeline; the program's stated identity centers on training generalist physicians "prepared to practice in any clinical environment" with a strong primary care and community-integration orientation.
