Program Identity & Fit

The University of Chicago Med-Peds program is a small (16 total residents), academic combined-medicine program built on a 4+2 rotation structure that spans tertiary/quaternary adult care at UCMC and freestanding pediatric care at Comer Children's Hospital, supplemented by La Rabida (chronic illness, developmental disability, abuse/neglect) and Evanston NorthShore rotations for population breadth. Roughly 40% of training is ambulatory with a longitudinal continuity clinic panel spanning all four years, and a dedicated LUCENT primary care track allows residents to substitute inpatient blocks for additional ambulatory time in years three and four. The program bifurcates evenly at graduation - about half pursue Medicine, Pediatrics, or combined Med-Peds subspecialty fellowship (many staying at UChicago or going to NIH), and half pursue generalist careers as hospitalists, primary care physicians, or academic generalists - with most graduates holding academic appointments regardless of path. Structural supports (Quattro advising groups, a dedicated Med-Peds research mentor, individualized 3rd/4th-year curricula permitting global health, advocacy, medical education, or research blocks) signal a program that values residents who will shape a self-directed dual-specialty identity rather than default into one field.
