Program Identity & Fit

Rutgers NJMS Med-Peds is a small, four-year combined program (5 per year, 20 total) anchored in Newark's urban safety-net environment, with 75% of training occurring at University Hospital and the Children's Hospital of New Jersey serving a predominantly Black and Latinx inner-city population, supplemented by exposure to a federal system (East Orange VA) and a private tertiary center (Cooperman Barnabas). The program is built around a longitudinal combined Med-Peds continuity clinic, a dedicated Transitional Care curriculum for adolescents/young adults, and a Health Equity thread, reflecting a strong community-health and continuity-of-care orientation rather than subspecialty prestige-chasing. Research is structured but modest in scope—an expected QA/QI capstone project plus optional case reports and elective research with faculty/fellows—positioned as a skill-building and presentation opportunity rather than a hallmark of the program's identity. Leadership and program culture emphasize mentorship, integration with categorical residents, teaching, and a "family" ethos, with faculty who themselves trained in-house and remained for careers in hospital medicine, primary care, and infectious disease.
