Program Identity & Fit

MUSC's Med-Peds program is a university-affiliated combined training pathway (since 1999) built on the strength of MUSC's academic medical center, ranked #1 in South Carolina with multiple nationally-ranked adult and pediatric subspecialties. Training emphasizes primary care identity delivered through a dedicated Med-Peds continuity clinic staffed by Med-Peds-trained faculty, alongside broad exposure to inpatient and subspecialty medicine in both disciplines. The program explicitly supports diverse post-residency paths - community practice, academic primary care, hospital medicine, or fellowship in either or both fields - and integrates scholarly work (evidence-based and QI projects) plus community engagement and advocacy (Ronald McDonald House, MUSC CARES Clinic, school partnerships) as core mission elements. It emphasizes recruiting and retaining residents who reflect the patient population they serve and values a close-knit, dual-identity Med-Peds community distinct from, but embedded within, the categorical IM and Peds programs.
