The University of Maryland Combined Internal Medicine/Emergency Medicine program sits within a large, well-resourced academic EM department in downtown Baltimore, drawing on high-acuity clinical sites including UMMC Downtown and Midtown, Mercy Medical Center, and the Baltimore VA, with close ties to a nationally recognized Shock Trauma and resuscitation research infrastructure. The department explicitly frames itself around pioneering research and training future academic leaders, evidenced by an annual Research Day, $16M+ in grants since 2021, and a large faculty of 90+ with dedicated researchers and informaticists. Graduates pursue both academic and community practice paths, and the combined EM/IM track produces physicians equipped for dual-boarded critical care, resuscitation, and complex medical-emergency crossover roles rather than a single-specialty trajectory.
