Program Identity & Fit

LSU's combined Emergency and Internal Medicine program is one of only twelve to fourteen such programs nationally, rooted in the legacy of Charity Hospital's near-300-year mission of caring for New Orleans' underserved regardless of ability to pay. Training is anchored at University Medical Center, the region's only Level I trauma and safety-net facility, supplemented by rotations spanning tertiary referral centers (Ochsner, Our Lady of the Lake), community hospitals (Slidell, West Jefferson, Terrebonne), a dedicated pediatric hospital (CHNOLA), and a critical-access rural site (Lallie Kemp) that builds self-reliant, low-resource decision-making. The five-year structure alternates six-month EM/IM blocks with optional hospitalist, primary care, EMS, ultrasound, international, and research tracks, and graduates pursue academic medicine, pulmonary/critical care fellowship, hospitalist and community EM practice, and primary care in roughly equal measure. The program explicitly values residents who embody its patient population and mission of equitable, safety-net care, evidenced by its Social Emergency Medicine curriculum and URM-focused population health scholarship for underserved-community-oriented students.

Who it fits
An applicant drawn to high-acuity, safety-net dual-specialty training with a demonstrated interest in underserved/vulnerable populations and a broad, unspecialized career trajectory spanning critical care, hospitalist, and community practice.
Research intensity
Moderate - an optional EM research track exists alongside clinical/education-focused curricula, but research is not positioned as central to program identity.
Career orientation
Mixed - Community Practice, Fellowship, Academic Medicine
Important
The program strongly encourages applicants to have at least one Standardized Letter of Evaluation (SLOE) from Emergency Medicine faculty and a traditional letter from Internal Medicine faculty, and recommends personal statements specifically address interest in combined EM-IM training. A dedicated Population Health/Social Emergency Medicine scholarship track requires applicants to self-identify as an underrepresented minority with demonstrated interest in social determinants of health and underserved care.
