Program Identity & Fit

This is a community-based, faculty-heavy family medicine residency embedded within WellSpan York Hospital, a Level 1 trauma center with a large Level 3 NICU, comprehensive stroke certification, and robotic surgery capability, giving residents exposure to a full-spectrum, high-acuity community hospital rather than a quaternary academic center. The program emphasizes broad-scope family medicine including obstetrics (multiple faculty with active OB practices), point-of-care ultrasound curriculum, osteopathic manipulation exposure through DO faculty, and a distinctive narrative medicine curriculum led by long-tenured faculty. Many current faculty are graduates of the program itself, reflecting a "grow your own" culture oriented toward community practice and teaching rather than subspecialty fellowship pipelines or physician-scientist tracks; institutional research infrastructure exists at the WellSpan system level (IRB, clinical trials in oncology, cardiology, orthopedics) but is not positioned as central to the residency's identity.
