Program Identity & Fit

This is a newly accredited, rural-mission family medicine program (2-2-2) built as a hybrid between a tertiary training base (CentraCare St. Cloud Hospital, 489 beds, for PGY-1) and a rural continuity site (CentraCare Rice Memorial Hospital and Willmar Lakeland Clinic) explicitly designed to produce full-spectrum rural physicians for Greater Minnesota. The curriculum emphasizes high-volume obstetrics (500+ deliveries annually, C-sections, vacuum-assisted deliveries), procedural breadth (colonoscopy, POCUS, joint injections, colposcopy, vasectomy, stress testing), emergency medicine, critical care, and addiction medicine, reflecting the scope-of-practice demands of an unopposed, low-resource rural setting. The program explicitly names health equity, cultural humility, and care of a linguistically and economically diverse rural community (Willmar's school district is under 40% white with 10+ languages spoken) as core to its identity, alongside interprofessional leadership and lifelong evidence-based practice; research appears as a curricular rotation but is not emphasized as a scholarly output expectation. Career orientation is unambiguously toward rural, full-scope primary care practice rather than fellowship or academic subspecialization, and the program values applicants committed to community-oriented, procedurally broad rural medicine and work-life balance.
