Program Identity & Fit

The Dixon Rural Training Track is a community-based family medicine program affiliated with the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford, explicitly designed to train physicians for full-spectrum rural practice rather than urban or subspecialty careers. Residents spend PGY1 primarily in Rockford for broader inpatient and specialty exposure before transitioning to longitudinal, continuity-based outpatient training at the Town Square Family Health Center in Dixon, with hands-on exposure to office procedures (skin procedures, joint/headache injections, colposcopy, point-of-care ultrasound and spirometry) that support independent rural scope of practice. Graduate outcomes overwhelmingly show placement into rural and small-community full-spectrum family medicine, hospitalist work, and some faculty/rural residency leadership roles, with only occasional fellowship (geriatrics, palliative care) or academic detours; research is not a program emphasis. The program values continuity of care, procedural self-sufficiency, and genuine commitment to practicing in small or underserved Midwestern communities.
