Program Identity & Fit

UIC's Family Medicine Residency is an academic, urban underserved program built around full-spectrum practice, training residents to deliver inpatient, obstetric, geriatric, addiction, reproductive, and LGBTQ+ care across three distinct clinic sites (an FQHC, a sliding-scale Spanish-speaking community clinic, and a diverse university-area center) plus two unopposed family medicine inpatient services at UI Health. The program is explicit about its mission to serve areas of unmet need and vulnerable populations, holds a RHEDI-affiliated full-scope reproductive health and abortion training track, and integrates buprenorphine/methadone-based addiction medicine and a dedicated Street Medicine elective. Scholarship is structured but not mandatory for career advancement, supported by an active department-wide research infrastructure (health equity, HIV/AIDS, women's health, informatics) that residents can tap through an individualized "Resident Research and Scholarship Program." Faculty and curriculum emphasize behavioral medicine integration, social determinants of health, and generalist breadth over subspecialty fellowship funneling, positioning graduates for full-spectrum community and safety-net practice rather than academic subspecialization.
