Program Identity & Fit

This is a community-based, rural-immersion family medicine residency situated in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, training residents at a 222-bed regional specialty hospital that serves as the referral hub for a vast, underserved rural catchment area. The curriculum is explicitly structured around rural and community medicine—mandatory rural rotations, maternity outreach to designated "maternity deserts" in Manistique and Newberry, community medicine rotations with health departments and mental health providers, and an annual global health elective in rural Belize. Optional longitudinal tracks in Integrative Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (open to MDs) signal a whole-person, broad-scope generalist orientation rather than a subspecialty pipeline, and clinical research infrastructure exists at the hospital level (cardiovascular, oncology trials) but is not integrated into resident training. The program values residents committed to full-scope rural/underserved primary care practice, community engagement, and comfort with geographic and professional isolation rather than fellowship-driven subspecialization.
