Tufts/Cambridge Health Alliance is an urban, university-affiliated Family Medicine residency explicitly built around health equity and primary care for underserved, immigrant-rich populations in Malden, Everett, Cambridge, and surrounding metro-north Boston communities. The clinic functions as the actual curriculum (an NCQA Level 3 PCMH), with outpatient continuity, team-based care, behavioral health/addiction integration, and a longitudinal leadership/quality-improvement/change-management thread running through all three years; residents are the sole house-staff service at Everett Hospital, giving unusually direct inpatient responsibility without competition from other trainees. The program offers ten-plus self-selected Areas of Concentration (addiction, adolescent/school-based health, geriatrics, integrative medicine, community health, academic medicine, etc.) and a distinctive Master Teacher Fellowship pathway for those drawn to medical education scholarship, reflecting an institutional emphasis on information mastery/evidence-based medicine and on producing physician-educators and community-embedded generalists rather than subspecialists. CHA's broader research infrastructure (health equity, immigrant health, addiction, mindfulness centers) signals that scholarly/QI work is available and encouraged but not required for graduation, consistent with a program that values clinical equity work, team leadership, and comfort with complex, resource-limited, culturally diverse patients over pure research output.
