Program Identity & Fit

The Family Medicine Residency of Western Montana is a rural- and underserved-mission-driven program sponsored by the University of Montana, training residents across five affiliated sites in Missoula and Kalispell (Community Medical Center, Providence St. Patrick Hospital, Partnership Health Center, Logan Health Medical Center, and Greater Valley Health Center). Its affiliation with the University of Washington Family Medicine Residency Network provides curricular support and leadership development while anchoring the program's identity firmly in full-scope rural family medicine rather than subspecialty or tertiary-care training. Outcomes data (65% of graduates practicing in Montana, 68% in rural/underserved locations) confirm the program's core purpose: producing generalist physicians who will serve small, geographically isolated, and Indigenous communities, reflected in its explicit land acknowledgment and stated commitment to culturally-safe care for Native populations. The program values adaptability, community-mindedness, and a genuine commitment to place-based, comprehensive primary care over research productivity or fellowship pipeline development.
