Program Identity & Fit

Swedish First Hill is a longstanding (since 1970), university-network-affiliated (UW Family Medicine Network) urban community program built around full-spectrum family medicine, with a heavy obstetrical identity evidenced by dedicated OB tracks, a robust Advanced Obstetric Fellowship, and a separate Geriatric Medicine Fellowship. Training spans three distinct clinical sites (First Hill, Ballard, Downtown Family Medicine) plus a nursing-home longitudinal experience at Kline Galland, and residents are explicitly trained in Suboxone therapy, gender-affirming hormone care, and comprehensive reproductive health, reflecting a mission oriented toward marginalized and underserved populations. The program embeds a formal Anti-Racism/Intersectional Justice curriculum, community medicine tracks (Housing/Health Access, LGBTQI+ Health, Reproductive Justice), and global health opportunities (Malawi rotation), signaling strong emphasis on social justice, advocacy, and community leadership alongside clinical breadth. Scholarly work exists mainly at the fellowship level (QI projects, conference presentations, optional faculty-development pathway) rather than as a core research mandate, and career orientation leans toward full-spectrum community/underserved practice and family medicine fellowship subspecialization (OB, geriatrics) rather than academic research.
