Program Identity & Fit

This is a community-based, Sutter Health-affiliated family medicine residency in Modesto's Central Valley, a growing but still small-town, agricultural, and medically underserved region with high social complexity among patients. The program builds its identity around full-scope, family-centered primary care, adding non-traditional rotations (street medicine, culinary medicine, social determinants of health, community medicine, the business of medicine) that signal an explicit orientation toward whole-person and community-embedded practice rather than subspecialty pipeline-building. Research exists as a structured but supportive scholarly requirement (didactic curriculum, IRB mentorship, year-end symposium, one scholarly project) rather than a driver of the program's mission, and graduates are explicitly prepared for "independent practice in a variety of settings," pointing toward broad community and primary care careers rather than fellowship funneling. As a newer, growing 13-resident/year program under Sutter Gould's large multispecialty network, it emphasizes close-knit culture, faculty mentorship, and residents who are self-motivated, community-oriented, and comfortable in a smaller-town, resource-linked but socially complex setting.
