Program Identity & Fit

This is Samaritan's rural training track of its family medicine residency, an ACGME-accredited, unopposed three-year program that begins with six months of foundational training at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, a level 2 trauma center in Corvallis, before transitioning residents to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital, a critical access hospital in coastal Newport, for the remaining 2.5 years. The curriculum is built around early clinical immersion and increasing autonomy in a resource-limited rural setting, with substantial inpatient responsibility throughout all three years, longitudinal continuity clinic, prenatal continuity, geriatrics rounding, POCUS training, and broad procedural exposure including addiction medicine, gender-affirming care, and outreach to uninsured and unhoused populations. Scholarly activity is required but oriented toward quality improvement and evidence-based practice rather than hypothesis-driven research, consistent with a program whose explicit mission is producing full-spectrum physicians for rural and underserved communities. The program explicitly values non-traditional applicants and those who have overcome systemic barriers, and structures housing and wellness supports around the demands of coastal/rural relocation.
