Program Identity & Fit

This is a newly launched, community-based Family Medicine residency at Knapp Medical Center, a 227-bed acute care hospital in Weslaco, TX, situated along the U.S.-Mexico border in the Rio Grande Valley. The program emphasizes full-spectrum family medicine training across inpatient medicine, obstetrics, women's health, pediatrics, geriatrics, obesity medicine, and hospital-based procedural skills, with a distinctive focus on Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS). As an inaugural program, it offers residents the unusual opportunity to help shape institutional culture and curriculum from the ground up, with progressive autonomy, broad elective time, and one-on-one teaching from community physicians rather than a heavily structured research or subspecialty apparatus. The program appears to value adaptability, community commitment, and interest in serving an underserved, culturally distinct border population over research productivity or narrow fellowship tracking.
