Program Identity & Fit

This is a university-based, academic family medicine residency housed at Penn State's tertiary/quaternary academic medical center, distinguished as the nation's first Department of Family and Community Medicine and offering full-spectrum training including an independent family medicine OB service, inpatient adult and pediatric care, and a Level I trauma/NICU environment. The program is collaborative rather than opposed, integrating residents into pediatric, OB/GYN, and emergency teams, and layers this hospital-based intensity with two continuity clinic sites (Nyes Road and Fishburn Road) serving mixed suburban, geriatric, immigrant, and underserved populations. Scholarly activity is faculty-supported and structurally embedded (PhD research mentors, protected time, national presentations), and the curriculum offers extensive individualization through nine-plus Areas of Concentration (sports medicine, addiction medicine, obesity medicine, hospital medicine, academic medicine, underserved/marginalized care, wilderness medicine, lifestyle medicine, women's health) plus a formal ACGME osteopathic recognition track open to both MD and DO residents. The program values full-spectrum competence (procedures, OB, inpatient, POCUS), self-directed scholarly and community engagement, and residents who will pursue fellowships, academic faculty roles, or leadership in underserved care rather than a single narrow track.
