Program Identity & Fit

This is a tribally-owned, ACGME-accredited (with Osteopathic Recognition) family medicine residency sponsored by the Choctaw Nation Health Services Authority, based at its 44-bed hospital in Talihina, Oklahoma, with an academic partnership through OSU Medicine and a network of outlying rural clinics across southeastern Oklahoma. The program is explicitly rural and underserved-focused, unopposed, and built around full-spectrum continuity care spanning inpatient medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, and long-term care, with residents trained toward independent rural practice rather than subspecialization. Osteopathic training is structurally embedded (OMM/OMT didactics, OPP CME hours, OMM competency exam) and MD applicants must complete osteopathic modules, signaling a genuine hybrid DO/MD identity rather than a nominal recognition. Distinctive features include tribal health system integration, procedural certifications (Nexplanon, IUD, Botox for migraine, MOUD/MAT), an individualized learning plan revisited biannually, and a call structure and culture oriented toward producing broad-scope, self-sufficient rural family physicians rather than fellowship-bound subspecialists.
