Program Identity & Fit

Lexington Health's Family Medicine Residency, launched in 2023 within a large community-based integrated health system in the Midlands of South Carolina, is explicitly oriented toward producing physicians for independent community practice rather than subspecialization. The curriculum emphasizes broad-based generalist training (inpatient/outpatient continuity, rural outpatient exposure, geriatrics, long-term care, health systems management, behavioral health) with a new dedicated continuity clinic and GME facility under construction, reflecting a system investing in primary care infrastructure. Research exists at the institutional level (cancer, heart/vascular, surgery, women's health trials) but is not woven into the family medicine curriculum itself, indicating research is available systemically rather than central to resident training. As an inaugural, non-university residency inside a community hospital network, the program values residents drawn to hands-on generalist skill-building, community rootedness, and the opportunity to help shape a new program rather than pursue an academic or fellowship-heavy path.
