Program Identity & Fit

Brown Family Medicine is a long-standing (continuously accredited since 1975), university-affiliated program that blends an allopathic residency with a newer osteopathic track across two safety-net sites—Family Care Center in Pawtucket and Thundermist Health Center in West Warwick. The training environment centers on Patient-Centered Medical Homes serving ethnically, linguistically and economically diverse underserved communities, with integrated behavioral health, MAT, gender-affirming care, and structured community rotations (street medicine, refugee and unhoused populations, Special Olympics). Career orientation is broad-spectrum generalist practice—community health centers, academic medicine, or Indian Health Service—supported by named pathways (Global Health Fellowship via BRIGHT/AMPATH, Primary Care Diabetology fellowship, Street Medicine track, longitudinal FMOB track) and a strong health-equity/advocacy mission. The program values residents committed to caring for marginalized populations, holistic/procedural full-spectrum skill-building (OMT, outpatient orthopedics, dermatology, reproductive health procedures), and engagement in scholarly work tied to underserved health rather than bench research.
