Inova Fairfax Family Medicine Residency is a longitudinal, community-based training program in Northern Virginia built on continuity of care: after a traditionally structured PGY-1 hospital year, residents move into the Family Medicine Center full-time, carry their own panel, and are paired in structured PGY2-PGY3 partnerships that emphasize mentorship and continuous patient relationships across the full three years. The clinical model is explicitly outpatient-centered and practice-ready, with faculty split 60% clinical/40% academic, dedicated practice-management curriculum (marketing, office economics, malpractice/insurance), and hospital coverage functioning as a hospitalist service for affiliated community offices rather than a tertiary referral center. Research exists at the institutional level (Inova Office of Research, seed grants, biorepository) but is not woven into the residency's stated identity, which instead centers on producing clinically confident, independently practicing family physicians, evidenced by 100% ABFM pass rates and graduates reporting readiness for "busy, real-world" practice with multiple job offers. Named tracks include Sports Medicine (with its own fellowship) and International/Community Health, plus elective pathways in pediatrics, orthopedics, and public health, but the core distinguishing feature is the panel-based continuity model with senior-junior resident partnerships.
