Program Identity & Fit

An urban safety-net program established in 1969 that reports more than 550 graduates to date, training family physicians for urban, rural and global practice. The primary continuity site is Whittier Clinic, which houses addiction medicine, behavioral health, comprehensive care of LGBTQ+ patients, community health workers, point-of-care ultrasound and a wrap-around adolescent program on site. Training includes full-spectrum reproductive and maternity care with a group prenatal care model, sports medicine with fellowship-trained faculty, osteopathic manipulative therapy for both osteopathic and allopathic residents, and certification in Integrative Medicine using a University of Arizona curriculum. Residents carry a three-year community advocacy project with their classmates, hold a weekly protected academic half-day for workshops, procedures and research, and may take rural and global rotations at sites that have recently included Senegal, Tanzania, the Philippines and Thailand.
