Program Identity & Fit

This is a young, community-based family medicine residency (first graduating class 2023) at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, a 220-bed Level II trauma center in coastal New Hampshire, affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine and HCA Healthcare's national GME network. The program is explicitly oriented toward producing primary care physicians for New Hampshire communities with the option to pursue hospitalist practice, and structures training around two continuity clinics—a Federally Qualified Health Center (Greater Seacoast Health) and a hospital-owned practice (Appledore Family Medicine)—emphasizing longitudinal patient relationships, team-based care, and population health/QI work. Multidisciplinary integration with co-located internal medicine and psychiatry residents reduces specialty silos during shared inpatient rotations, and scholarly activity is required but modestly scoped (one QI project by PGY2, a PGY3 grand rounds presentation) rather than research-driven. As a developing program, it explicitly values residents who will help shape curriculum and culture, and it prioritizes physician retention within the local community over subspecialization.
