Program Identity & Fit

This is a community-based, university-affiliated Family Medicine program at Memorial Health University Medical Center, a 612-bed academic medical center serving as Mercer University School of Medicine's Savannah campus, embedding residents within a "networked" (non-opposed) multi-specialty GME environment. The program uses a Clinic First model with split two-week clinic/rotation blocks and emphasizes broad-spectrum family medicine preparation for underserved and low-resource community practice, reinforced by a partnership with J.C. Lewis Primary Healthcare Center (FQHC) and its mobile health unit serving Savannah's homeless population. Scholarly activity is structured but not research-driven: residents complete quality improvement projects, FPIN Help Desk Answers, and present at an annual in-house Research Day, with graduates pursuing outpatient private practice, hospitalist roles, health department positions, and fellowships in sports medicine, geriatrics, global health, and emergency medicine. The program offers in-house Sports Medicine and FM-OB fellowships, reflecting its broad-spectrum, procedurally-inclusive identity, and values residents who value teaching (constant Mercer medical student presence), community engagement, and lifestyle balance in a mid-sized Southern city.
