Established in 1995 as a Rural Training Track, the Caldwell program is a small, unopposed community-based Family Medicine residency training four residents per year with an explicit mission to serve rural and underserved Idaho populations, evidenced by an 88% rural-practice placement rate among graduates. The clinic is physically attached to West Valley Medical Center, a 150-bed community hospital, giving residents easy movement between outpatient and inpatient/ER/OR/cath-lab settings and a genuinely broad-scope clinical exposure typical of rural full-spectrum practice. Training emphasizes high-volume outpatient continuity care, customizable rotations, and exposure to tertiary subspecialty and academic environments in Boise (Saint Alphonsus, St. Luke's, Boise VA) to round out an otherwise community/rural-anchored curriculum. Research is not a structural pillar here; the program values broad procedural competence, flexibility, and a tight-knit, service-oriented culture over academic productivity.
