Program Identity & Fit

Kingsport Family Medicine is a community-based ACGME program in rural Appalachian Tennessee, distinguished by dual MD/DO training with dedicated osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) time, three DO faculty, and a small 1:3 faculty-to-resident ratio that supports close supervision. The clinical environment emphasizes high-acuity inpatient and ICU exposure alongside underserved outpatient and free-clinic care (Providence Clinic, Sevierville free clinic), with a longitudinal sports medicine track through local high schools and multidisciplinary chronic disease management for patients with advanced comorbidities. Training explicitly builds toward full-spectrum, independent rural/underserved practice rather than subspecialization, with structured peer-group cohorts and continuity nursing home/home-visit experiences reinforcing whole-person, community-anchored care. The program values communication skills, motivation, leadership, and comfort managing complex, resource-limited populations over research productivity.
