Program Identity & Fit

The Duke Rural Family Medicine Residency is a university-affiliated but community-embedded program that trains physicians for rural North Carolina practice through a deliberate geographic progression: PGY1 hospital-based training at Duke University Hospital and Duke Regional Hospital in Durham, followed by PGY2-3 immersion at Maria Parham Health, a 205-bed community hospital, with continuity clinic anchored at Duke Primary Care Oxford (and expanding to Henderson). The program is explicitly built around outpatient continuity exceeding ACGME minimums, early panel-building from day one, and a graduated autonomy model pairing residents one-on-one with community physicians in PGY2/3. Career orientation is squarely toward rural, community-based full-spectrum family medicine and health equity/population health leadership rather than subspecialty fellowship or bench research, though residents share didactics with Duke's academic FM program and have access to departmental research faculty and POCUS curriculum development. The program values self-directed, community-oriented applicants committed to leadership, chronic disease management, and closing rural health gaps rather than pursuing academic subspecialization.
