Program Identity & Fit

This is a rural training track of the Southern Colorado Family Medicine residency, built around Valley-Wide Health Systems, a federally-oriented community health center network serving the medically underserved San Luis Valley. The structure is distinctive: a single intern year at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo followed by two years of continuous, longitudinal rural practice in Alamosa designed to mimic real primary care panel management and chronic disease continuity. Training emphasizes full-scope family medicine including obstetrics, OMT exposure for osteopathic residents, procedural skills (colonoscopy), and outreach to agricultural workers and homeless populations via mobile health units. The program values residents who want deep community integration, longitudinal patient relationships, and a stated commitment to rural or underserved practice rather than subspecialization or research.
