Program Identity & Fit

This is a community/university-hybrid Family Medicine program built around two Saginaw referral hospitals (Covenant HealthCare and MyMichigan Saginaw) that serve as the region's complex-care centers, giving residents a broad tertiary-adjacent patient mix rather than a purely primary-care panel experience. The program explicitly ties itself to Michigan's underserved and rural mission (MIDOCs loan repayment, two-year underserved practice commitment) while also offering named tracks in Sports Medicine, Hospitalist Medicine, and Faculty Development, plus POCUS and procedural training (joint injections, dermatologic and gynecologic procedures) that support outpatient scope-broadening. Graduate outcomes are dominated by hospitalist and multispecialty group placements with a steady minority pursuing fellowships (sports medicine, sleep, addiction medicine), indicating a program oriented toward broad-scope community/hospital-based practice rather than academic family medicine. Structured scholarly activity (FPIN GEMS, QI projects) and an annual research symposium show research is present and supported but not positioned as central to program identity.
