Established in 1994, this three-year community-based Family Medicine residency operates out of Baton Rouge General, the area's only full-service community hospital, and emphasizes ambulatory care excellence delivering accessible, affordable, patient-centered care to a Louisiana population that closely mirrors residents' future practice settings. The curriculum is broad and generalist, spanning inpatient medicine, pediatrics, OB, critical care, geriatrics, sports medicine, and an extensive elective menu (rural medicine, addiction/behavioral medicine, orthopedics, palliative care), with minimized overnight call via night-float structuring. Scholarly activity is present and collaborative (partnering with LSU Health Sciences Center-Baton Rouge; poster/oral presentations and QI projects) but functions as a supportive rather than defining pillar. Alumni outcomes show a strong pull toward fellowship subspecialization (sports medicine, addiction medicine, perinatal/child health) alongside community practice and rural/underserved primary care, suggesting the program values well-rounded clinicians capable of broad-scope practice as well as focused niche development.
