This is a community-based, single-institution Family Medicine residency in rural western Kentucky, training since 1971 with an explicit mission of producing rural family physicians. The curriculum emphasizes broad, hands-on generalist training - heavy inpatient blocks, an open ICU, full obstetrics with C-section exposure, and extensive procedural and subspecialty rotations (cardiology, orthopedics, GI, nephrology, ENT) delivered through a single-program structure that allows close 1:1 mentorship with other specialties rather than competing with multiple co-resident programs. Research is not emphasized; the program instead foregrounds team-based care, on-staff behavioral health and pharmacy support, and PCMH recognition, signaling a service-oriented, whole-patient primary care model. Graduates go on to practice broadly in rural and metropolitan settings, across primary care, hospitalist medicine, and FM subspecialties like geriatrics or women's health, reflecting a generalist, community-practice-first orientation rather than a fellowship pipeline.
