Program Identity & Fit

United Family Medicine Residency is a community-based, unopposed program rooted in nearly 70 years of service to St. Paul's West 7th neighborhood, with a mission explicitly framed as "To Serve & To Teach" and a focus on the medically uninsured, underinsured, and underserved. Clinical training centers on United Hospital (a Level 2 trauma center) and United Family Physicians Clinic, with deep community touchpoints including Health Care for the Homeless, Union Gospel Mission Clinic, Face to Face high-risk teen OB clinic, and home visits, alongside strong obstetric (including waterbirth), procedural, sports medicine, and rural training experiences. Research is present through a longitudinal Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC) project rather than as a bench-science pursuit, and the program's structural emphasis (Family Medicine Month, ARCH anti-racism curriculum, Mangata wellness curriculum, rural rotation for all residents) signals preparation for full-spectrum generalist practice in underserved or rural settings rather than subspecialty fellowship. The program values residents oriented toward community advocacy, cultural humility, and comprehensive continuity care over those seeking a narrowly academic or research-driven pathway.
