UMKC Emergency Medicine is a county-university hybrid built around University Health Truman Medical Center, a downtown safety-net Level 1 trauma center serving a predominantly adult, underserved urban population, supplemented by pediatric training at Children's Mercy (largest regional PICU, only Level 1 pediatric trauma center between St. Louis and Denver), specialty rotations at Saint Luke's, and community EM exposure at University Health Lakewood. The curriculum foregrounds critical care (20 weeks, exceeding ACGME minimums, with early PGY-2 ICU team-lead autonomy), longitudinal EMS training with base-station certification and state EMS medical director faculty, and deep pediatric EM integration throughout residency rather than as isolated blocks. Established in 1973 as one of the country's original EM programs, it offers named longitudinal tracks in Medical Education and Social Emergency Medicine (street medicine, addiction medicine, social determinants of health) rather than a heavy research infrastructure, and explicitly recruits residents committed to safety-net, underserved care alongside teaching.
