UCSF-ZSFG is a four-year, academically elite emergency medicine program anchored at Zuckerberg San Francisco General, the city's sole Level 1 trauma center and safety-net hospital, with additional pediatric emergency training at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. The program is explicitly mission-driven around caring for vulnerable, underserved, and diverse urban populations, pairing high-acuity clinical exposure (75,000+ ED visits, 4,500+ trauma patients annually, EMS base hospital status) with a research infrastructure that includes PECARN, SIREN, a two-year research fellowship, and a Global Health Fellowship with WHO and international field placements. Every resident completes a required Area of Distinction with a scholarly project, QI/patient safety project, and administrative project, reflecting an institutional expectation that residents engage in scholarship and systems-level thinking regardless of ultimate career path.
