One of the oldest EM residencies in the country, DRH/Wayne State is anchored at Detroit Receiving Hospital, an urban Level 1 trauma/burn safety-net center where residents manage nearly every admission and lead resuscitations from early training, supplemented by dedicated pediatric training at Children's Hospital of Michigan, tertiary/complex medicine at Harper University Hospital, and community-based practice at Huron Valley Sinai. The program pairs high-acuity, high-autonomy county-hospital training with a structured 18-month iterative didactic curriculum, a unique ED Critical Care resident role, and a large clinical research infrastructure with 24-hour research assistants supporting a flexible scholarly project requirement. Its stated mission centers on training physicians for both academic and community EM careers, with explicit institutional commitment to diversity, health disparities, and community outreach (Social Emergency Medicine elective, D-RESUS scholarship for underrepresented visiting students).
