Program Identity & Fit

This is a large, academic dermatology program uniquely integrated between McGovern Medical School and MD Anderson Cancer Center, giving residents unusual exposure to cutaneous oncology, complex inpatient consult dermatology, and dermatopathology alongside safety-net care at LBJ Hospital, Quentin Mease, Thomas Street HIV Clinic, and San Jose Clinic. With 21 approved positions, a 25-faculty integrated department, joint conferences with Baylor College of Medicine, and $2.5 million in annual research funding, the program supports both academic and procedural/surgical development, including in-house Mohs and dermatopathology fellowships. While clinical excellence and broad exposure (common, rare, and cancer-associated skin disease) are prioritized, most graduates enter private practice, with a minority (~10%) pursuing academic careers, and fellowship training (Mohs, dermatopathology, cosmetic/laser) is common and encouraged. The program states it values candidates with strong clinical judgment, prior advanced training, research engagement, and versatility rather than a single fixed career pathway.
