Program Identity & Fit

University of Rochester's Dermatology program is a small, university-based academic department (5 positions/year, 15 total residents) built around close, hands-on faculty-resident collaboration across a full range of subspecialty clinics (blistering disease, atopic dermatitis, cutaneous oncology, pediatric vascular anomalies, psoriasis, psychosomatic dermatology). Research is structurally embedded through an NIH training grant supporting dedicated research pathways for residents pursuing academic careers, including a program tailorable for MD/PhD candidates, alongside ACGME-accredited Mohs and Dermatopathology fellowships that reflect strong in-house procedural and pathology training (five-day-per-week Mohs and dermpath sign-out). The curriculum explicitly integrates the biopsychosocial model originating at Rochester, and dedicates rotation time to multicultural/culturally-sensitive dermatologic care and cosmetic procedural training. Graduate outcomes span academic Mohs surgery, community dermatology, and private practice, indicating the program values broad clinical competence and psychosocial engagement rather than a single funneled career track.
