Mount Sinai's Dermatology Residency is a high-volume, tertiary academic program spanning three combined hospital sites (Mount Sinai Hospital, Morningside, West), giving residents exposure to both common dermatoses and rare, complex conditions (neurofibromatosis, cutaneous sarcoid, pseudoxanthoma elasticum) alongside one of the world's busiest phototherapy units. Research infrastructure is substantial and identity-defining, anchored by an NIH-funded T32 in Systems Skin Biology, active psoriasis/vitiligo/alopecia clinical trials, dermatopathology research tracks, and a dedicated year-long research fellowship for students pursuing a gap year. Residents run their own supervised cosmetic, surgical, and general dermatology clinics, rotate with Mohs surgeons and dermatopathologists, and staff a teledermatology service, reflecting an emphasis on procedural autonomy layered onto academic rigor. The program clearly values applicants who can engage with translational/basic science alongside clinical training, oriented toward producing academic dermatologists and subspecialty fellows (Mohs, dermpath, pediatric derm) rather than solely community practitioners.
