Program Identity & Fit

This is a newly established, small Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency (two residents per year) within Mayo Clinic's Arizona academic medical center, a high-volume tertiary/quaternary referral and transplant hub with subspecialty depth (~50 dedicated AP/CP faculty) rarely seen in a program this size. Training spans Mayo's own hospital plus distinct partner sites—Phoenix Children's Hospital, the Maricopa County Medical Examiner, and Caris Life Sciences—giving residents forensic, pediatric, and commercial molecular-diagnostics exposure alongside core surgical pathology, transplant/renal pathology, and transfusion medicine built on one of the country's largest solid-organ transplant programs. Research and scholarship are structurally embedded (one dedicated research month, up to nine elective months, active faculty publication record, enterprise-wide research infrastructure), and the curriculum explicitly builds toward laboratory leadership via an Acting Directorship and Quality/Management/Informatics rotations, signaling a design intended to produce both academically productive subspecialists and future lab directors. The small cohort model emphasizes individualized mentorship, graduated autonomy, and flexibility to tailor training toward either academic fellowship tracks or private-practice/laboratory-leadership careers.
