Program Identity & Fit

USC/LAC+USC is one of the largest Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine fellowships in the nation (18 fellows, 6 per year), anchored by Los Angeles General Medical Center's safety-net mission and extended across four sites — LAGMC, Children's Hospital LA, Miller Children's and Women's Hospital Long Beach, and Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children's Hospital — exposing fellows to extreme-acuity, high-volume neonatal pathology including ECMO, HIE, PPHN, and surgical neonates. Research infrastructure is substantial and structured, spanning a basic science program in developmental lung biology/BPD (NIH- and Hastings Foundation-funded), a Developmental Cardiovascular Research Program, point-of-care echocardiography research, and a dedicated biostatistics course, with fellows regularly presenting at APS/SPR and Western SPR meetings. The program explicitly trains for both academic and clinically rigorous private-practice neonatology careers (roughly half pursue clinical practice, others academic positions), reflecting an identity built on individualized mentorship, multi-site clinical versatility, and integration with a Fetal and Neonatal Institute linking Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Neonatology under one longitudinal care structure.
