This UTHealth Houston Med-Peds program is an academic, university-affiliated combined program based in the Texas Medical Center, training residents across a private tertiary quaternary hospital (Memorial Hermann-TMC), a county safety-net facility (Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital), a dedicated children's hospital, and MD Anderson Cancer Center, giving a deliberately layered exposure spanning underserved county populations to complex subspecialty referral cases. The curriculum uses three-month categorical block switching with a combined Med-Peds continuity clinic, weekly joint noon conferences, and dedicated combined-wards teams staffed by Med-Peds faculty, reflecting a structural commitment to genuine dual-specialty integration rather than parallel tracks. Research is present and encouraged (QI initiatives, IHI curriculum, faculty-mentored projects, conference travel) but not positioned as central to program identity; graduate outcomes show a roughly even split between primary care/hospitalist practice and subspecialty fellowship (cardiology, GI, heme/onc, critical care, allergy/immunology), with many graduates remaining in Houston as faculty or community physicians. The program appears to value residents comfortable with breadth across acute, chronic, ambulatory, and complex-disease care, and who can individualize training through electives toward either primary care or fellowship-oriented paths.
