Program Identity & Fit

This is a longstanding academic Med-Peds program (established 1982, 48 residents) built around a multi-hospital, safety-net-heavy training environment in Memphis, rotating residents through Regional One Health, the VA Medical Center, Le Bonheur Children's Hospital (including its Level 1 Pediatric ER and high-risk ROH NICU), and St. Jude Children's Hospital for subspecialty pediatric exposure. The curriculum uses a 3+1 model on internal medicine and a 4+2 model on pediatrics, giving residents structured continuity clinic alongside broad inpatient and subspecialty rotations across three major hospital systems. Scholarly output is resident-driven and visible (case reports, regional/national conference presentations, some peer-reviewed publications), supported by university-wide R1 research infrastructure, but the program's stated mission centers on delivering care to Memphis's underserved population, reflected in resident-led community outreach (Soulsville Charter School healthcare pipeline program) rather than a research-first identity. The program values residents whose goals align with underserved, safety-net clinical service alongside flexibility to pursue either subspecialty fellowship or general Med-Peds practice.
