A community-based residency sponsored by Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, a 295-bed acute care facility in Somerset serving an eleven-county region of south-central Kentucky. Graduate medical education began at the hospital in 2014, and the hospital now trains roughly 39 residents across family medicine and internal medicine programs plus a fellowship, making it an opposed setting. The hospital reports nearly 200 physicians across 38 specialties, a Level II neonatal nursery, separate neurologic, cardiac, medical and surgical intensive care units, and an emergency department with close to 40,000 visits a year. The curriculum pairs inpatient and outpatient family medicine with subspecialty rotations across more than twenty fields, among them anesthesia, emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics. Scheduled teaching includes weekday outpatient morning report, inpatient morning reports, noon conferences four days a week, monthly morbidity and mortality review, and quarterly skills days and grand rounds.
