Cook County's Family Medicine Residency is a mission-driven, safety-net program embedded in one of the nation's largest public health systems, training residents to deliver comprehensive primary care to underserved, largely minority urban populations at Stroger Hospital and five community-based Family Medicine Centers (Jorge Prieto, Englewood, Austin, Sengstacke/Provident) plus correctional health at Cermak. The curriculum emphasizes continuity in patient-centered medical homes alongside a heavy adult inpatient service (four teams), maternal-child inpatient care, integrated behavioral health, addiction medicine, and correctional health, reflecting a population-health and health-equity orientation rather than a subspecialty-procedural focus. The department explicitly frames its mission around reducing health disparities, medical home transformation, and preparing residents for leadership in clinics, hospitals, and health systems, with faculty holding local/regional/national leadership roles; research is present but oriented toward disparities-reduction scholarship and practice transformation rather than bench science. Graduates are positioned for community health center practice, safety-net system leadership, or academic/administrative roles in underserved care rather than narrow subspecialty fellowship tracks.
