This is a community-based, three-year EM residency at a large county safety-net hospital where EM and IM are the only two residency programs, giving residents unusually high procedural autonomy and minimal competition for airway, line, and resuscitation experience from day one. The clinical environment is high-volume (~90,000 main-ED visits plus a freestanding satellite), high-acuity, level 2 trauma care with a physician-owned staffing group that integrates practice-management and administrative training into the curriculum. Research exists (QI project, scholarly activity, a dedicated research/toxicology month, and a new sim/research building) but is not the program's central identity; instead, the emphasis is on procedural mastery, POCUS proficiency, and graduating physicians prepared to practice independently in any setting - rural, community, or academic. The program explicitly values residents who want early, ungraded clinical responsibility and comfort functioning without subspecialty backup, over those seeking a heavily fellowship- or research-pipeline experience.
